Woodberry Forest, St. Catherine's #1 in VIS Championship
Friday, November 3 -- St. Catherine's placed all five scorers in the top 21 of the girls race for their victory, while the boy's winner had no one place higher than 17th and used a solid pack in the 20's to capture the Virginia Independent Schools Cross Country Championship which was held at Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia. Over 35 private schools and more than 600 athletes competed on this pleasant, 70 degree day.
On the girls side, Hamill from Collegiate raced to a 25 second victory. Roanoke Catholic's Doherty was the winner in the boy's race with a time of 16:19. Three Northern Virginia schools finished in the top six teams. Paul VI finished third, Bishop O’Connell was fifth and Bishop Ireton was sixth out of 23 teams. Jessica Wolfe of Bishop Ireton was the top finishing northern Virginia runner, coming in fourth place with a time of 20:12. Mary Hogan of Paul VI finished fifth, Karolina Swiadek of Bishop O’Connell was eighth, Eleanor Boyce of Paul VI finished 12th, Claire Conron of Bishop Ireton was 14th, and Megan Fogarty of Paul VI was 19th. All of these girls were named to the All-State Virginia Independent Schools team.
Northern Virginia boys teams which finished in the top 10 were Bishop O’Connell (2nd), Episcopal (3rd), Paul VI (8th) , and Bishop Ireton (9th). Individually, Paul Costello of Paul VI (2nd), Dan Antalics of Bishop O’Connell (3rd), Jonathan Lee of Episcopal (6th), Tim Harkin of Bishop O’Connell (11th), Daniel Davis of Paul VI (15th), and Nick Mazzenga of Bishop Ireton (20th) were all named to the All-State Virginia Independent Schools team.
